Iranian Lawmakers Submit Fast-Tracked Bill to Withdraw from NPT

Iranian lawmakers have submitted a triple-urgency bill to parliament calling for Iran’s immediate withdrawal from the NPT.Proponents believe that staying within the treaty is now not in the national interest of Iran due to the growing international tension.Reasons stated by sponsors include recent security threats, sabotage, and what they call US-Israeli aggression towards the infrastructure of Iran.In particular, they blame IAEA for politicizing the inspections when the governing body of the IAEA submitted Iran’s dossier to the UNSC.This bill refers to Article X of the NPT allowing for withdrawal in case of extraordinary circumstances that seriously jeopardize the supreme interests of a state. They believe that the withdrawal will allow Iran to regulate its own security and state matters on its own.

Triple-urgency bill is waiting for approval of the chairman of the parliament in order to pass for discussion in an open session.
The bill, in case of advancement, could indicate a new strategic vision for Iran.
It could also indicate a new approach to Iran’s involvement in global nonproliferation structures. There was no official announcement of such decision until now.
