50 Districts Under Disaster Alert: Bangkok Officials Race Against Time to Drain Canals

Floodwaters have begun receding across parts of Bangkok following a brief break in torrential downpours that previously prompted the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to declare all 50 districts as disaster zones. Over a 48-hour period, the city was hit with nearly 300mm of rainfall, which submerged major roads, trapped vehicles partly underwater, and filled canals to capacity. With the heavy rain temporarily easing, authorities have scrambled to accelerate pumping and drainage efforts to clear water from overflowing canals and lower overall water levels.

In response to the crisis, the BMA established 233 temporary shelters and safely relocated approximately 4,200 displaced people, while BMA-run schools were ordered to close to ensure student safety and allow institutions to assess damage and prepare for upcoming exams. However, the Thailand Meteorological Department has warned that persistent thunderstorms and a low-pressure system combined with a strong south-westerly monsoon could bring further heavy downpours, keeping officials on high alert for additional flash floods and potential river overflows.
