Dr. Dilip Nath’s life is a real example of the American Dream. He was born and raised in Bangladesh. He grew up with a rich culture, a close community, and a strong hunger to learn. Even as a young man, he wanted to make a big difference in the world. He knew he needed a wider horizon. So at 16, he moved to the United States. He became the first person in his family to move there and the first to go to college.

Arriving in America at 16 was not easy. He faced culture shock and a big language barrier. He treated English as the key to his future. He took language classes and practiced all the time. Money was also tight. He worked long hours in many jobs to support himself and pay for school. These hard early years made him strong, adaptable, and grateful for community support. He often says, “Do not look for perfection; focus on continuous improvement.”

He wanted to understand America better, so he studied U.S. government and democracy on his own. He went to the State University of New York (SUNY). He earned many degrees, including an MBA and a DBA. Later, he studied at Harvard Kennedy School. He worked as a programmer at Canon USA and taught IT at colleges. Then he moved into public service. For over 30 years, he worked at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. He became Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO). He used technology to help close unfair gaps in healthcare and education.

For Dr. Nath, success is not about titles. It is about helping everyday people. He has lived in Queens, New York, for more than 33 years. There he became a trusted community leader. He founded NAVA and co-founded ABHF. He speaks up for many causes: affordable healthcare, better public schools, immigrant rights, fighting hate crimes, helping domestic violence survivors, affordable housing, better transportation, care for older people, and after-school programs for children.

As a leader, he believes in empathy and being easy to reach. He leads from the front. He works side by side with his team. He trusts his team and gives them freedom.

He lets people learn from mistakes. This helps them become more independent. His story shows what vision, hard work, and never stopping improving can do.
