Dilip Chauhan, the Deputy Commissioner for Trade, Investment, and Innovation at the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs, has made significant strides in empowering the South and Asian communities in New York. His journey, marked by a blend of public service and entrepreneurship, showcases his dedication to fostering growth and inclusivity.
Before joining the Mayor’s Office, Chauhan served as the Executive Director of Southeast & Asian Affairs in the Brooklyn Borough President’s office. Here, he worked tirelessly to enhance the visibility and resources available to the South and Asian communities in Brooklyn. By fostering a stronger relationship between these communities and the Borough President’s Office, Chauhan ensured that governmental resources were more accessible and that the community’s voice was amplified in local governance.
Chauhan’s impact extends beyond Brooklyn. He was the first South Asian appointed as Deputy Controller of the Minority Affairs office in Nassau County, New York. In this role, he set guidelines to empower Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBE), organizing boot camps for small businesses and initiating community awareness campaigns. These efforts not only facilitated greater participation from MWBEs but also fostered strategic partnerships with various community organizations, creating a more inclusive economic landscape.
As the Founding President of the New York South Asian American Chamber of Commerce, Chauhan played a pivotal role in raising the representation of the South Asian community in high-end business forums. Under his leadership, the chamber became a vital platform for the approximately seven million South Asians across the United States, highlighting their contributions to the economy and ensuring their voices were heard.
Chauhan’s commitment to community building and public service has earned him recognition and respect. His “Gateway to South Asian American Community of New York” presentation garnered widespread acclaim, leading to the declaration of November 12, 2016,
as “Dilip Chauhan Day” in the 6th US Congressional District of New York. This honor reflects his unwavering dedication to bridging communities and fostering mutual understanding and cooperation.
In addition to his public service, Chauhan serves as a Board member of Services Now for Adult Persons, Inc (SNAP) in New York, further demonstrating his commitment to diverse community needs. With a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Chauhan’s unique combination of technical expertise and public service acumen makes him a standout figure in the realm of community empowerment and economic development.
