“The pen is mightier than the sword,” goes the saying, but few journalists embody this philosophy as completely as Md. Badsha Mia. Known professionally as M M Badshah, he has spent over two decades staring down threats and intimidation while exposing injustice, corruption, and human rights abuses across Bangladesh.
Starting his journalism career in 2000, Badshah worked with Dainik Manabzamin, Channel S (UK), Islamic TV, Diganta TV, SA TV, and Kyodo News (Japan). Today, he serves as the Chief News Editor of Bangla TV, where he continues to shape the landscape of crime and investigative journalism in Bangladesh. His bold reporting has led to the release of wrongfully convicted prisoners, exposed human rights violations, and highlighted corruption at various levels.
However, telling the truth comes with a price. Throughout his career, Badshah has faced numerous threats, including direct attempts on his life. Local criminals have stormed his home, and law enforcement officials have tried to silence him. Yet, he remains unwavering. His fearless journalism has earned him prestigious national and international awards, including the Human Rights Award, ICFJ Fellowship, and BRAC Migration Award.
Recently elected as the General Secretary of the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB), Badshah is now working to ensure better safety and professional development for crime reporters. In a profession where risks are high, M M Badshah continues to stand as a beacon of truth.
