Zohran Mamdani presented special certificates of recognition to renowned Rabindra Sangeet artists Rezwana Choudhury Bannya and Shwapnil Shojib during “Anandosondhya,” a cultural celebration marking the 165th birth anniversary of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore at the Jewish Center in New York.

The event, organized to celebrate Bengali culture and Rabindra Sangeet among the Bangladeshi diaspora, featured music, dance, and tributes to Tagore’s enduring literary and musical legacy. The evening’s principal performers, Living Legendary Rezwan Choudhury Bannya and Eminent Singer Shwapnil Shojib, captivated the audience with performances of Tagore’s timeless songs.
Mayor Mamdani honored the two artists for their contributions to promoting Bengali culture, Rabindra Sangeet, and the rich heritage of the Bengali people on the international stage by presenting them with special certificates of recognition. According to the organizers, it was the first time Rabindra Sangeet artists had received such recognition from the Office of the Mayor of New York City.
Receiving the honor, Rezwana Choudhury Bannya said, “Rabindranath’s songs are more than music. They embody our culture, consciousness, and human values. Such a heartfelt celebration of his legacy in the diaspora, along with this recognition, has deeply inspired me.”

Shwapnil Shojib said, “The opportunity to introduce the Bengali language and culture to audiences around the world through Rabindra Sangeet is my greatest achievement. This recognition from New York City will remain a memorable milestone in my artistic journey and inspire me to continue my work with even greater dedication.”
The program also featured a solo dance performance by acclaimed dancer Russel Ahmed, whose presentation received enthusiastic applause from the audience.
The event was organized by About Time Events. Founder Waliuddin Ahmed Chowdhury said the initiative aims to introduce younger generations growing up abroad to the Bengali language, culture, and the philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore.
The evening concluded with a community rendition of the beloved Rabindra Sangeet “Purano Shei Diner Kotha,” as audience members joined Rezwana Choudhury Bannya and Shwapnil Shojib in song. A video of the emotional finale has since attracted widespread attention on social media, where it has been viewed and shared by millions.
